Why using the right guitar pick is so important...
Three years ago, I'm standing in a basement studio auditioning for a hard rock (almost speed metal) band. I have my trusty jazz bass (weapon of choice), a pocket full of guitar picks in various sizes and a lot of adrenalin. I'm completely psyched about playing for this band and want to do really good on the audition. The lead guitarist, a natural shredder, looks over at me to check if I'm ready....the drummer counts off....then bam....we come out screaming into the first song......

I'm a little nervous, very excited, hand muscles a little tight... I shake it off and continue....

The drummer counts off the next song...bam....screaming along again...I feel like I'm playing nothing but 64th note bass runs....my hand is slightly aching..and getting sweaty...I'm trying to ignore it...keep shaking off and rubbing the hand....

Over the next couple of hours we're seven songs deep.... I begin to realize that I'm having trouble holding onto to my pick... it's thin, its flimsy and way too small for my hand...my right hand won't stop cramping up...spazzing out...I drop the pick several times...my mind is racing like "WTF do I do now?". .I made it through the night, ending up with a very sore and cramped hand.

As a 51 year old bass player, I use heavy gauge guitar picks because they're EASY TO HOLD. I love the wedges because they allow me to provide a lot of attack. Between plucking, thumping, slapping and picking I can get a whole range of bass voices. The pick may be the smallest piece of musician's equipment but if you don't have the right pick at the right moment you're in trouble, and that's not what you want while playing in front of a crowd.
